How to Write SEO Optimized Copy for Your Business

So you want to learn how to write SEO copy for your business –– great! Over at The Quirky Pineapple Studio HQ, we’re firm believers in the power of SEO for growing your business, boosting brand recognition, and increasing your revenue.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves…

In today’s digital world, having a strong online presence is an essential tool for businesses to succeed. However, there’s more to “being online” than having a website or a social media page –– you need to make sure you’re discoverable (aka easy to find) by the right people.

That’s where SEO (or search engine optimization) comes in!

So, if you want to learn how to write SEO copy that doesn’t just captivate your audience, but also helps your business grow… you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s jump right in!

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization –– most commonly referred to as “SEO” –– is the practice of optimizing your copy and content to increase visibility and help it rank better on search engine results pages.

In other words, SEO helps you show up online when people are searching for who you are, what you offer, and what your work entails.

On the technical side of things, SEO helps search engines –– like Google –– understand the content of your website and it makes it easier for them to crawl, index, and rank your pages accordingly.

What does this mean? Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Crawl: a program used by search engines to collect data from the internet. (source)
  • Index: another name for the database used by a search engine – Indexes contain the information on all the websites that Google (or any other search engine) was able to find. (source)
  • Rank: Rankings in SEO refer to a website’s position on the search engine results page. (source)

That way, when users search for a keyword or phrase, the search engine will use its algorithm to determine which pages are the most relevant to the user’s search query and promptly displays the options.

What goes into SEO?

SEO involves using (and understanding) a wide range of techniques and best practices to help you show up online.

Here are the 5 main techniques that go into a well-done SEO strategy:

1. Keyword research

Keyword research refers to the process of identifying specific keywords and phrases that people are using to search for content related to your business. As the name suggests, keyword research means looking into the most popular keywords, analyzing their performance, and using them in your content marketing whenever relevant.

Overall, if you want to learn how to write SEO copy… keyword research is one of the most important things to focus your attention on.

Why? Because not only does it give you ideas for what to talk about, but it also helps you understand the language and the search behavior of your target audience. This way, you’ll have a much better chance of connecting with them and staying relevant.

Effective keyword research involves finding the sweet spot between search volume (the number of times a keyword is searched) and competition (the number of other websites using the same keyword).

Targeting keywords with a high search volume and low competition can help increase your chances of ranking higher on search engines. However, using keywords with a high competition volume can make it a lot more difficult… but that doesn’t mean impossible.

2. On-page optimization

On-page optimization is the process of optimizing individual web pages to help improve their visibility and relevance for specific keywords.

It usually involves optimizing various elements of the web page such as:

  • Title tags
  • Meta descriptions
  • Header tags
  • Images
  • Internal links
  • Readability

All of this with the intention of making them more search-engine friendly.

In the end, the goal of on-page optimization is to make it a lot easier for search engines to understand the content of your site and determine its relevance in relation to certain keywords.

3. Off-page optimization

While on-page optimization has to do with what you can see on the page, off-page optimization refers to improving the ranking of a certain website through external factors.

This usually includes activities such as:

  • Effective link-building
  • Social media marketing
  • Influencer outreach
  • Creating shareable content

In short, the goal of off-page optimization is to increase the number of backlinks –– aka people who are linking from their site to yours –– as well as to increase awareness and thought leadership.

The most effective technique of off-page optimization is, as we mentioned above, link building. By acquiring backlinks from other websites through various marketing tactics such as guest blogging and outreach, you can work to improve your site’s visibility and build relationships with other potential customers outside of your usual circle.

4. Technical SEO

The last important technique to keep in mind, technical SEO is all about optimizing your website from within.

This means working with a web developer –– or knowledgeable source –– to improve:

  • Website architecture
  • Website speed
  • Mobile responsiveness
  • Structured data markup

While website architecture has to do with how your site is structured –– and how easy to navigate it feels –– website speed has to do with the time it takes for each page to load. The faster it loads, the higher it will rank. Additionally, how accessible your website is on mobile also affects the way search engines rank your site: the more optimized it is for mobile, the better it’ll do.

All this has to do with user experience. The better the experience of navigation, the higher search engines will begin to rank your site.

Lastly, structured data markup is a technical aspect of SEO that involves adding additional information to your website’s code to help search engines understand the content of your web pages. By implementing structured data markup, you can improve the visibility and ranking of your website’s content on search engine results pages.

So, why does SEO matter?

Overall, by implementing these techniques, you can work to improve your website or content’s visibility and ranking –– all of which can lead to generating more organic (as in, not paid) traffic to your site.

And what does being organic have to do with anything? Well, for one… it’s a lot more cost-effective than a paid strategy.

At the end of the day, by investing in effective SEO strategies, you can create a long-term, sustainable source of organic traffic to your website, which can help to drive growth and success for your business in the long run.

And who doesn’t want to drive growth without the need to do all of the things and spend all of the money?!

(That’s a rhetorical question, friends… 👀)
